GPH is useful because it is easy to compare. It is dangerous because it looks more precise than it really is. A filter labeled 400 GPH does not necessarily move 400 gallons per hour once it is packed with media and installed below the aquarium.
What GPH actually means
GPH is pump flow. Turnover is GPH divided by aquarium volume. A nominal 300-GPH filter on a 50-gallon aquarium is a nominal six-turnover-per-hour system. The word nominal matters: installed flow can be lower.

Why installed flow is lower
- Mechanical media traps waste and adds resistance.
- Canister hoses and elbows add friction.
- Vertical head reduces pump output.
- Prefilters clog before the main media looks dirty.
- Spray bars and diffusers trade velocity for distribution.
Flow is not biological capacity
Fast water through tiny media is not the same thing as moderate water through a large, mature biological bed. Compare basket volume, sponge volume and the ease of keeping that media oxygenated and unclogged.
Distribution beats one violent jet
A long aquarium can have impressive turnover while still collecting detritus in a dead corner. Aim returns so they move water across the full footprint. On large tanks, two filters or a supplemental circulation pump can create more useful movement than one concentrated outlet.

Is 10x turnover too much for freshwater?
It can be unnecessary or uncomfortable for some fish if delivered as a strong jet. High total circulation can still be usable if the return is diffused and the livestock prefers moving water.
