Why Testing Matters

Rocks and stones are a fundamental part of aquascaping, but not every rock belongs in an aquarium. Some minerals dissolve slowly in water, altering pH, hardness, and mineral content in ways that stress or kill sensitive species. Others may contain metallic ores, sulfides, or absorbed chemicals that leach toxins. Testing before adding any rock to your tank is a non-negotiable step — it takes five minutes and can prevent months of unexplained water parameter problems.

This applies whether you are buying rocks from an aquarium store, collecting from nature, or repurposing decorative stones from a garden center. Even rocks labeled as "aquarium safe" by retailers deserve a quick confirmation test before they go into a tank with live animals.

The Vinegar Test

The most common and easiest test is the acid reaction test using white vinegar. Place a few drops of white vinegar directly on the rock surface and watch for fizzing or bubbling. Any visible reaction — even small, subtle bubbles — indicates that the rock contains calcium carbonate or similar carbonates that will dissolve in aquarium water over time, raising pH and GH/KH.

For a stronger test, use muriatic acid (hydrochloric acid, available at hardware stores as a pool pH reducer). Testing Driftwood and Other Hardscape

Driftwood does not need the vinegar test but does need preparation. Most driftwood releases tannins — organic compounds that stain water amber and lower pH slightly. Tannins are not harmful and many fishkeepers appreciate the natural look, but if you want clear water, soak the wood in a bucket for one to three weeks, changing the water every few days until it runs clear. Boiling speeds the process significantly for pieces that fit in a pot.

Some commercial driftwood products are pre-treated or sandblasted, but many are not. Always waterlog driftwood before placing it in the tank — dry wood floats and needs to absorb enough water to stay submerged. Weigh it down with rocks or tie it to a slate base until it sinks on its own, which can take days to weeks depending on the wood type and size.

Substrate and Gravel Testing
