A planted tank looks dramatically better and runs cleaner long-term — but takes more upfront thought. Here's the honest tradeoff.
You can build an aquarium two fundamentally different ways. The first is the "fish-only" approach — gravel substrate, plastic or silk decorations, standard lighting, focus on the fish. The second is the "planted" approach — aquasoil substrate, live plants, planted-spec lighting, focus on the whole scene. Both are valid; both have entirely different setup and maintenance profiles. Here's the honest comparison.
A planted tank looks dramatically better, runs at lower nitrate, and provides genuinely healthier conditions for fish — but requires planted-spec lighting, substrate that costs more than gravel, and at least one round of failed plants before you find what grows in your conditions. A low-maintenance tank is faster to set up, cheaper, and more forgiving — but always looks "decorated" rather than alive.

Water quality. Live plants consume ammonia and nitrate directly as fertilizer. A well-planted tank can run at 5 ppm nitrate while a comparable fish-only tank with the same stocking runs at 20–30 ppm. For fish health, this difference is significant.
Algae fight. Plants outcompete algae for nutrients. Once a planted tank establishes, it's actually harder to grow algae than in a fish-only tank — the plants consume the nutrients algae would otherwise use. The catch: the first 2–3 months while plants establish, algae has the advantage. This is the most common failure point for new planted-tank keepers.
Aesthetic ceiling. A mature planted tank — driftwood layered with anubias, java fern, carpets of moss, drifts of vallisneria in the background — is genuinely beautiful in a way no plastic-plant tank can match. The fish behave differently too: tetras flow through plant stems, corydoras dig in the substrate, gourami pick at leaves.
Long-term maintenance. Counterintuitively, an established planted tank is often less maintenance than a fish-only tank. Water changes can stretch from weekly to biweekly because nitrate stays lower. Algae problems are rare once plants take hold. The only added task is trimming and replanting stem plants every few weeks.

The cascade of secondary failures that a planted tank experiences when one variable is off doesn't exist in a low-maintenance setup.
Predictable cost. Once gear and plastic plants are bought, ongoing cost is just food and dechlorinator. Planted tanks have ongoing fertilizer cost, occasional plant replacement, and substrate that eventually breaks down (aquasoil) and needs replacement every few years.
Fits non-plant-friendly fish. Goldfish eat plants. Large cichlids destroy plants. Crayfish dig up plants. For these species, a low-maintenance tank with hardscape (rocks, driftwood, ceramic caves) and silk or plastic plants is the only practical choice.
Premium silk plants that flow naturally and don't tear fins. The aesthetic upgrade from cheap plastic; far better than budget plants.
Natural hardscape. Sturdy enough for plant-destroyers; looks great with or without live plants. Soaks for a few weeks before sinking on its own.
Reliable budget-fit strip for non-planted display tanks. Bright enough to see fish; not enough PAR for demanding plants. Cheap and reliable.
For most beginners, the right answer isn't "planted" or "low-maintenance" — it's low-tech planted. This means easy plants (java fern, anubias, hornwort) under standard or slightly-better LED lighting, no CO₂ injection, no aquasoil, occasional Seachem Flourish dosing. You get most of the water-quality and aesthetic benefits of a planted tank with most of the simplicity of a low-maintenance tank.
