Live foods trigger feeding responses that pellets and flakes cannot match. The movement of brine shrimp nauplii, daphnia, or microworms activates predatory instincts, encourages exercise, and provides nutritional variety that supports coloration, growth, and breeding condition. Commercially available frozen foods are a solid alternative, but culturing your own is cheaper over time, ensures freshness, and gives you a continuous supply on demand.
For breeders, live foods are not optional — they are essential. Newly hatched fry of most species are too small for commercial foods and need live prey during their first days. Baby brine shrimp and infusoria are the standard first foods for egglayer fry, while livebearers and larger cichlid fry can sometimes start on microworms or vinegar eels.
