If you only buy one piece of equipment beyond the absolute basics, buy a liquid test kit. The single biggest mistake new aquarists make is trying to keep fish alive without testing the water — and the second biggest is trying to test with paper strips. Strip kits are inaccurate enough that they routinely give "everything's fine" readings on tanks that are killing fish. A liquid drop kit costs about the same as a few strip tubes and lasts hundreds of tests.

For a healthy freshwater community tank, you're aiming for:
Anything above zero on ammonia or nitrite is a problem — do a 30–50% water change and re-test in 24 hours. Nitrate climbing past 40 means water changes are overdue; nitrate above 80 ppm starts to stress sensitive species.

Not for primary testing. Strips are routinely off by 0.5–1 ppm on critical parameters and can give "safe" readings on dangerous water. A liquid kit costs roughly the same and lasts hundreds of tests.
During cycling: every 2–3 days. Established tank: nitrate weekly, full panel monthly. New fish added: ammonia daily for the first week. Tank seems off: immediately.
Worth testing at setup and occasionally to spot trends, but stable pH within a wide range (6.5–7.8) is fine for most beginner species. Chasing a specific pH number is more often harmful than helpful.
Enough for FOWLR (fish-only) tanks. Reef tanks need separate kits for alkalinity, calcium, magnesium, and low-range nitrate/phosphate — Salifert, Red Sea, or Hanna Checkers are the standard upgrades.
