Every aquarium grows algae. Light, nutrients, and water produce algae as inevitably as they produce plant growth. The goal isn't eliminating algae entirely — it's managing it so the viewing panes stay clear while the tank maintains the healthy biofilm that fish, shrimp, and snails graze on. The right cleaning tools make this management quick and effective rather than a frustrating chore.
Magnetic Algae Cleaners
Magnetic cleaners are the most convenient tool for regular maintenance: place the cleaning half inside the tank and guide it from outside with the external magnet. Algae Types and Cleaning Approaches

Prevention vs Cure
The best algae management is prevention through balanced light, nutrients, and CO2. Algae thrives when one of these factors is in excess relative to the others — typically too much light or too many nutrients (from overfeeding or insufficient water changes) without enough plant mass to consume the surplus. Reducing the photoperiod to 6–8 hours, feeding conservatively, and maintaining regular water changes prevents most algae problems before they start.
When algae does appear, identify the type before choosing a response. Most algae problems are self-limiting in established tanks and resolve with minor adjustments to light duration or feeding.
Cleaning Schedule
The most effective cleaning routine is brief and consistent rather than occasional and thorough. A weekly two-minute pass of the front and side viewing panes with a magnet cleaner keeps glass clear with minimal effort. Monthly attention to the back glass and any visible buildup on equipment (heaters, intakes, spray bars) maintains the tank's appearance without marathon cleaning sessions.
Leave algae on surfaces that aren't in the primary viewing path — the back wall, the sides below the substrate line, and the undersides of hardscape. This algae provides natural grazing for herbivorous species, contributes to the biological diversity of the tank, and actually competes with problem algae types for nutrients and light. A tank that's too clean — scrubbed sterile on every surface — is biologically less stable than one with managed algae growth on non-viewing surfaces.
After cleaning the glass, use a gravel vacuum to remove the algae particles that settled to the substrate. Scraped algae that sinks and decomposes releases nutrients back into the water, potentially feeding the next round of algae growth. Removing the physical debris during the same maintenance session prevents this nutrient recycling loop.
A dedicated algae-scraping toothbrush — old, clean, and kept specifically for aquarium use — is the most versatile tool for hardscape cleaning. It reaches into crevices between rocks, scrubs driftwood surfaces, and cleans around equipment bases where flat scrapers and magnet cleaners cannot reach. Electric toothbrushes work even better, providing agitation that loosens stubborn algae with less manual effort. Designate one and label it clearly so it never ends up back in the bathroom.
