Why two heaters beat one

Add an external controller as the failsafe
Built-in heater thermostats are the part that fails. An external temperature controller has its own probe and cuts power to the heaters when the water reaches the set point. If a heater's internal thermostat sticks on, the controller still shuts it off. Many controllers also have alarms.
- Set heater thermostats slightly above target. Set the heaters' internal thermostats a degree or two above your target temperature.
- Set the controller to your actual target. The controller now does the real regulation.
- Place the probe away from heaters. Put it in a spot with good flow so it reads true tank temperature.

The clearest sign is a tank that drifts below its set point on cold nights, then recovers during the day. Log the temperature, or check it first thing in the morning for a week.
