Wait on durable, researched gear you do not need this week. Buy spares, test supplies and urgent items when you need them. Black Friday is November 27, 2026.
Wait for Black Friday on durable gear you have already researched and do not need this week: lights, canister filters, controllers and similar equipment you will keep for years. Buy right away anything that is urgent, expires, depends on a measurement you have not taken, or affects livestock. Black Friday 2026 is Friday, November 27, and Cyber Monday is Monday, November 30, as of October 2026.
Thanksgiving is the fourth Thursday of November, which makes it Thursday, November 26 in 2026. The federal holiday table published by the U.S. Office of Personnel Management lists Thanksgiving Day for 2026 on exactly that date. Black Friday is the day after, November 27. Cyber Monday is the Monday after the holiday weekend, November 30. Neither page gives a 2026 date for Black Friday or Cyber Monday, so those two dates are derived from the Thanksgiving date.
Many retailers start promotions well before the day and run them past it, so you do not need to buy on the exact date. What helps is a list made in advance. If you already know the tank size, the model you want and the maker's specs, a sale becomes a price check instead of an impulse buy. Our setup cost guide is a good place to build that list.
Write down four things for each item you might buy: the tank size and dimensions, the model of the gear it replaces or works with, the manufacturer's spec for the new item, and the reason you want it. If you cannot fill all four in, the item is not ready to buy. This one habit removes most sale-day regrets, because mismatched hoses, mounts and plugs are the usual reason aquarium purchases go back.
One way to use the dates is to sort your wish list into three groups before the weekend arrives: must have this month, can wait for a sale, and not needed. Put a spare heater, test supplies and anything for an urgent repair in the first group. Put lights, filters and controllers that you have already researched in the second. Anything you cannot justify in a sentence goes in the third.
The test for waiting is simple: does the old gear still work while you watch listings? If yes, and the replacement is a long-life item you have already researched, waiting costs you little. If you wait and nothing is discounted, you have lost nothing, because you were not in a hurry. These are the usual candidates.
| Category | Why it can wait | Check before buying |
|---|---|---|
| LED lights | Long-life item; you know the tank size and mounting | Mount fit, controller or app compatibility, plant or coral needs |
| Canister filters | You can plan the swap during a maintenance day | Hose size, media baskets, replacement part availability |
| Controllers and monitors | Optional automation; no urgency | Which plugs, probes and apps it works with |
| Stands and cabinets | Large and heavy; delivery and returns matter | Load rating, footprint, delivery terms and damage policy |
| Pumps and wavemakers | Replacement is planned, not urgent | Flow ratings at your head height, spare parts |
For specifics on what separates models, see the guides to aquarium lights, canister filters and smart controllers. These categories are where waiting costs you little. Whether a given model is discounted is up to the seller.
Match the mounting style and length to your tank before searching. Compare what is in each box, since some listings include a mount and others do not.
Check the hose diameter, the number of media baskets and whether replacement parts are listed. Compare the same model across sellers.
Check what plugs, probes and sensors it works with, and whether it needs an app account.
These links open searches. They are not deals, and listing availability changes daily.
Wait only for items that pass a final test: you would still be happy to buy them at the regular listing if no sale appeared. If the answer is no, you are buying the sale, not the gear. A neutral way to run the test is to write down what problem the item solves and how you would solve it otherwise.
Some purchases do not belong in a sale plan. A spare heater, a backup air pump and a spare for any part whose failure would hurt the tank should be in the cupboard before the winter. Waiting for a sale on a spare means you may not have one on the night you need it. Our power-outage plan lists the backups worth having.
A big percentage is not the same as a good price. Compare the same model across sellers rather than trusting a "was" price on one listing. Check what is in the box, because bundles sometimes swap a named part for a cheaper unnamed one. Read the model number, not just the product title.
Reviews deserve a second look too. The Federal Trade Commission announced a final rule in August 2024 prohibiting fake reviews and testimonials, including buying or selling them and paying for a particular sentiment. That helps, but it does not guarantee that a given listing is clean. Read the lower-rated reviews for repeated problems, and check the dates.
Read the seller line as well as the title. Marketplace listings can be shipped and sold by different parties, and the party that sells the item may not be the one that handles returns. Labels such as "open box", "refurbished" or "used" change what you are buying, so read the condition description and the return terms before you commit. On eBay, the same applies: read the condition, the seller's return policy and the photos, and skip used electrical items that arrive without a manual or a visible maker label.
Large items, especially glass tanks and stands, are where return terms matter. Read the seller's policy before you buy. Check who pays for return shipping, whether freight items have separate terms, and who honors the warranty, the seller or the maker. Photograph packaging and the item on arrival.
Delivery timing is regulated for sellers shipping to you. According to the FTC's guide to its mail, internet and telephone order rule, a seller that states a shipping time needs a reasonable basis for it, and one that states none must reasonably expect to ship within 30 days. If a seller cannot ship on time, it must either cancel and refund you or notify you of the delay and offer you the choice to cancel. If you are buying a gift for a deadline, compare the delivery dates shown at checkout and do not rely on the headline.
Black Friday 2026 is Friday, November 27, the day after Thanksgiving on Thursday, November 26. Cyber Monday is Monday, November 30. As of October 2026, the Thanksgiving date is listed by the U.S. Office of Personnel Management and the other two dates follow from it.
Long-life equipment you have researched and do not need immediately: lights, canister filters, controllers and larger items. If the old gear still works while you watch listings, waiting costs little.
Spares and urgent items: a backup air pump, a spare heater and parts whose failure would hurt the tank. Test supplies are best bought as needed because reagents expire.
Compare the same model across sellers, check what is in the box against the standalone listing, and read lower-rated reviews. A large percentage on a single listing is not proof of a good price.
No. The buttons open ordinary search results on Amazon and eBay and do not promise a discount. Check the listing for the current terms.
